Recently, I was thinking about the life span of various insects (as one does) and a question crossed my mind. If dragonflies live for around a day, that means to that dragonfly a day is an entire lifetime… So theoretically, do me and a dragonfly live for the same amount of time?
I shared my musings with a friend and obviously I was met with a condescending look and a friendly sigh that seemed all too used to my frequent ramblings and attempts at philosophical speech. (This actually led me to many ponderings around perception and relatively of time, and much to my friends disdain, resulted in more ramblings and attempts at philosophical speech).
in many cultures, the dragonfly symbolises seeing beyond illusions,
changing your perceptions, self realisation, transformation and new beginnings.
But since then, the topic of dragonflies has cropped up a few times in my day to day life – at least enough times for me to notice. I’m a believer in everything happening for a reason and upon noticing an influx of dragonfly narratives, I took it upon myself to do some research.
It turns out that in many cultures, the dragonfly symbolises seeing beyond illusions, changing your perceptions, self realisation, transformation and new beginnings. I delved further into dragonfly readings to find out more.
Also what’s more badass than a fire breathing insect? Even the word dragonfly implies mysticism and magic.
Dragonflies start their lives in dark, murky waters, eventually growing wings and flying free across the ponds. They see the world in an entirely different way to humans, viewing things literally in slow motion (we see in 60 images per second, whereas our dragonfly friends see in 300). This enables them to see things a lot clearer and in a lot more detail than we can even imagine. Whats more, when they are flying, they take in their entire surroundings, foreseeing every limitation and barrier that may arise. Having been around for 300 million years, they must be doing something right, and in my opinion we can learn a lot from them. Also what’s more badass than a fire breathing insect? Even the word dragonfly implies mysticism and magic. You only have to watch them move and you are instantly reminded of fairie realms and other worlds.
We can climb out of the dark, murky waters, grow wings and take flight. Transformation is possible at every moment
Once I had saited my new found desire to read about dragonflies, I started to wonder where in my life I could be more dragonfly. Everything I had read seemed to fit in far too well with changes in perception I have recently felt within myself. Just like the dragonfly, we have the ability to see past our limitations and endure our changes and challenges with grace and ease. We can climb out of the dark, murky waters, grow wings and take flight. Transformation is possible at every moment; like the dragonfly, we just need to broaden our perceptions and remove the clouds from our vision. Dragonflies have lessons to teach us all – lighten up, become airborne, change your perceptions, fly with dragons.
